R-22 Conversions in Atlanta, Marietta & Alpharetta, GA
Since Jan. 1, 2020, the Environmental Protection Agency has banned all manufacturing and importation of R-22 refrigerant due to the harm it causes to the environment.
While they’ve been slowly phasing out R-22 Freon over time, many homeowners are now converting their older HVAC units to use more eco-friendly refrigerants.
If you’re looking to transition to more sustainable cooling, the professionals at United Air Temp can help with seamless R-22 conversions.

What Is Refrigerant?
Refrigerant is a cooling agent that switches between gas and liquid form to facilitate heat transfer in an HVAC unit. This heat transfer may look a bit different depending on the HVAC system you have:
- Central AC: Refrigerant circulates between the indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser. The indoor unit contains the evaporator coil, which absorbs heat and cools the indoor air. The refrigerant carries that absorbed heat to the condenser for outdoor release.
- Ductless mini-split: A single outdoor unit is connected to one or more indoor units via electrical wiring and refrigerant lines. The evaporator coils similarly absorb heat from the room and send it to the outdoor compressor and condenser coils to fully release the heat.
- Heat pump: Heat pumps can cool and heat your home. They operate just like central AC in cooling mode. When heating, the entire process is reversed, with the refrigerant absorbing heat from the outdoor air and releasing it inside your home.
There are many refrigerant types, but R-22 is no longer manufactured and is much harder to source, given the harm it causes to the ozone layer.
What T Expect During an R-22 Conversion
United Air Temp makes the R-22 conversion process quick and hassle-free. Your HVAC technician will replace the compressor, evaporator, and condenser to ensure the unit is compatible with the new refrigerant.
Then, we’ll recover the old R-22 refrigerant and recharge the system with the new refrigerant. We’ll test your system to ensure it runs smoothly and make any required adjustments to ensure optimal efficiency and reliability.
Alternative Options for R-22 Systems
Aside from changing your R-22 system’s refrigerant type, you have alternative options:
- Recharge your HVAC system with R-22 Freon: If you choose to continue using R-22, you’ll have to do so using stockpiled and recycled refrigerant, which is more expensive.
- Replace your HVAC system: If your system is over a decade old, upgrading your AC unit may make more financial sense and prove to be a worthy long-term investment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are HCFCs and R-22?
HCFCs (hydrochlorofluorocarbons) are refrigerants that deplete the ozone layer, and R-22 Freon is a type of HCFC that the EPA has phased out. They imposed a complete ban on the production and import of HCFCs by 2030.
What types of refrigerant are used to replace R-22?
R-410A is the typical replacement. However, it’s also being phased out and will no longer be manufactured or imported after 2025, so this is a temporary solution.
What do homeowners have to do to comply with the R-22 phase-out?
Homeowners can keep using their R-22 system until they need to recharge refrigerant, then you’ll need to convert or replace your unit.
United Air Temp was named the 2022 HVACR National Contractor of the Year.
