With temperatures that hover in the high 90s and humidity that’s often over 70%, the Atlanta area can be unbearably hot in the summer. Can a ductless mini-split air conditioner be a viable cooling solution in this climate?
Even with their small size, ductless mini-splits can be quite effective in the South.
How Does a Ductless Mini-Split Work?
A ductless mini-split consists of a condenser unit outside and one or more indoor air handlers, each with refrigerant lines and electrical wiring to connect the air handler to the condenser.
The condenser unit houses the condenser coil, a condenser fan, and the compressor, while the air handler includes the evaporator, the air filter, and the blower fan.
To cool your home, air from inside your home is blown over the evaporator coil, where the refrigerant inside expands into a gas and absorbs the heat.
The vaporized refrigerant then travels to the outdoor unit, where it’s compressed and passed through the condenser coil. Here, it releases the heat to the outdoors and condenses back into a liquid before it’s sent back to the air handler to begin the cycle again.
Benefits of Installing Ductless Mini-Splits
Ductless mini-splits are an excellent choice for homes anywhere in Atlanta or the Southeast region. They feature:
- Compact air handlers that fit in virtually any room
- Easy installation without the need for ductwork
- Efficient operation with most units rated 20 SEER or higher
- The ability to cool one room, a few, or an entire home
- Independent comfort controls for each room or zone
- Optional heating capabilities for year-round comfort
Ductless Mini-Splits vs. Central AC
Ductless mini-splits can be an efficient and reliable alternative to a standard central air conditioning system, but which is the right choice for your home? It will depend on several factors, such as:
- Installation cost: Ductless mini-splits typically cost around 30% more than central air systems. However, that’s only if you don’t need ductwork installation or replacement.
- Operational cost: Due to their highly efficient design, ductless mini-splits use less energy and cost less to operate than a central AC.
- Cooling capacity: For a few rooms or a smaller home, a ductless system can work quite well, but for larger homes, a central AC may be needed to provide the required cooling capacity.
- Ductwork: A central AC system relies on ductwork to distribute cool air, which is inherently less efficient than individual air handlers. However, air leaks, poor insulation, obstructed airflow, and other issues can further decrease efficiency.
